Rare-leaved cedar forest
Rare-coniferous cedarwood blueberry-lingonberry-moss-lichen with cedar elderberry. The Shumilikha Valley is located at a distance of about 4 km from Lake Baikal opposite the meadow glade — "elakan", located on a steep, steep root slope. The slightly convex top of the moraine ridge and its southern slope to the placer valley. The closeness of the cedar crowns forming the first tier of the stand is 0.3—0.4, group. Height 17-18 m, diameter 38-57 cm. In the second tier, there is a younger, multi-aged fir with a height of 5 to 10 m and a diameter of 7-14 cm. There is also a smaller fir undergrowth 1-1.5 m high.
Cedar elderberry forms a tier 3-4 m high, 0.4 m wide. The bushes are old, spreading, with very thick branches. In the same tier, there is a small admixture of birch semi-shrubs and small trees with brown peeling bark, hybrid forms of Betula middendroffii — sp.— sol., with a height of 2 to 4 m.
We can see that this sparsely wooded area has retained its general appearance, which indicates its indigenous character and stable condition. At higher levels above Lake Baikal, such rare-coniferous cedar forests are replaced by fir and birch-fir woodlands and redwoods with cedar elderberry and associations of cedar elderberry with lichen.
In the Shumilikha Valley, the dead-cover cedar and cedar elderberry Association occupies small areas on the steepest, inaccessible indigenous slopes of the southern exposure, in the upper part of the forest belt. It was only briefly described by us in 1943 on a steep slope, below a moraine lake. This cedar grove forms a strip extending from the sharp top of the ridge down to the "elakan" — a large meadow glade formed at the site of an avalanche. The slope is very steep, sometimes almost precipitous, rocky, with individual rocks. On the opposite, northern, side of the ridge, facing the neighboring ravine, a blueberry-kashkarp fir tree grows at the very top, sharply, as if on a ruler, delimited from the described cedar grove.
The stand is pure cedar, not old, with an average height of 12 m. There are old thick, but low-leaved, dry-standing cedars. There is a lot of good cedar and fir undergrowth. The total closeness of the crowns of both generations is 0.7—0.8. In the undergrowth there is a sparse cedar elam.
There is only scant information in the literature about cedar forests with undergrowth of cedar elderberry. V. A. Povarnitsyn notes that in the basin of the Upper Angara River, cedar forests with undergrowth of Pinus pumila are rare and have not been studied. In the monograph on Russian cedar forests, this author cites them only for the Baikal region and Transbaikalia, where they are typical, occurring near the upper border of the forest in inaccessible places and small areas. He cites two types: "mossy" and "lichenized cedarwood with an undergrowth of cedar shale." The first type is similar to the shikshovo-blueberry-green moss cedar with cedar elderberry described by us in the Shumilikha area, the second is similar to our rare—leaved blueberry-lingonberry-moss-lichen cedar with cedar elderberry. In both types of Cookhouse there is a rare fir in the II tier, "disappearing at the upper border of the forest." In the area of Shumilikha, on the contrary, at the upper border of the forest, cedar prevails over cedar, disappearing only in the driest habitats. Both of our cedar forests are distinguished by the presence of shiksha in the cover, which is characteristic of the Baikal cedar forests of this range, as well as for some high-altitude cedar forests of Altai, Eastern Sayan and the Prisaysky mountain taiga region of Tuva, which do not contain cedar wood.
For the northeastern coast of Lake Baikal, L. I. Malyshev points out three associations with the understory of cedar elderberry: "cedar elderberry with the understory of cedar elderberry with the aspect of lingonberry" on the second terrace, "cedar elderberry with the understory of cedar elderberry with the aspect of blueberry and badan" on moist mountain slopes and "cedar elderberry with the understory of shrubby alder and cedar" on the northern rocky slopes near the "sea". He does not provide a description of these associations.
A rare understory of cedar elderberry was indicated by L. I. Malyshev in the associations "cedar-cowberry", "cedar bagulnikovo-lingonberry", "cedar badanovy" and for the "badan cedar-fir forest" described by him on the northwestern coast of Lake Baikal, as well as in "cedar blueberry" on the northeastern coast. N. V. Dylis notes that cedar forests and larch-cedar woodlands with cedar understory are quite common on the ridges adjacent to Lake Baikal, where they occupy significant areas. Such sparsely wooded areas form the upper boundary of the forest vegetation, but they are also found below. The brief description given by this author corresponds in general terms to the associations of this series that we have observed. A. I. Buzykin mentions the presence of cedar woodlands with cedar understory in the Baikal region.
