Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a city in the Spanish Canary Islands and actually the main island of the Gran Canaria archipelago. The city is the capital of the island and the Canary Autonomous Region. It is also the largest city on the islands. Las Palmas currently has 379,000 residents, and this number is increasing as a result of the influx of residents from neighboring towns.

History
The city is not very young, because it was created in the middle of the last millennium. So it has about 600 years of history behind it. Its existence was initiated by the Spanish captain who conquered the island. The place where he stayed became the place of today's metropolis. As a result of the conquest, Gran Canaria became the property of Spain and remains to this day. Being the first city on the island of Las Palmas, it took over all the main functions - from administrative to cultural. The sugar cane trade has developed particularly intensively. Being an island city, Las Palmas has also been attacked by pirates. Raids were also carried out by the Dutch and the British. Another revival of trade took place in the nineteenth century after the establishment of the port and the duty-free zone, but since that time the city has also begun to turn into a tourist center.

Monuments
The most interesting area of the city is the historic district of Vegeta. It can be compared to European Old Towns because it is the oldest, the first urban district that currently collects most of the preserved attractive buildings. The most important of them is the Santa Ana Cathedral. The temple was built over the course of 80 years at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries and is an overview of many architectural styles. Next to these two significant monuments in Las Palmas, you can find many interesting houses built several hundred years ago and the Bishop's Palace.
